L-052 Butterfly Pleco Care Guide

A Complete Care Guide for Dekeyseria brachyura

L-052 Butterfly Pleco in an aquarium

Introduction

Dekeyseria brachyura, the L-052 butterfly pleco, is a beautiful patterned pleco from the Rio Negro drainage in Brazil. Their body displays an intricate network of cream to tan lines on a dark brown background, creating a labyrinthine pattern reminiscent of butterfly wings or stained glass. Each individual has a unique pattern, making this species particularly interesting to collectors.

Native to fast-flowing, rocky, blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro, D. brachyura inhabits highly oxygenated, soft, acidic water over smooth rocks and boulders. Their habitat requirements are specific and must be replicated in captivity for long-term health.

L-052 butterfly pleco care is intermediate. They require fast flow, high oxygen, warm temperatures, soft acidic water, and driftwood. Their stunning individual patterning, moderate adult size, and increasing availability make them one of the most sought-after patterned plecos in the hobby.

Basic Overview

Species NameDekeyseria brachyura (L-052)
Lifespan10-15 years
Size4-5 inches
CareIntermediate
Tank Size40 gallons minimum
Temperature79-86 degrees F
BehaviorNocturnal; territorial with own species; algae and biofilm grazer; cave-dweller; fast-water specialist; blackwater conditions important

Common Misconceptions

"Standard community tank conditions are fine." L-052 butterfly plecos come from the soft, acidic, highly oxygenated blackwater Rio Negro system. Hard, alkaline community tank water causes chronic stress. Soft, acidic, tannin-rich conditions are important for their long-term health.

"They eat algae wafers like common plecos." While they eat algae, their primary food is biofilm growing on smooth rock and wood surfaces. Driftwood must always be available. Algae wafers supplement but do not replace the need for grazing surfaces.

"Multiple butterfly plecos can share a tank." They are territorial with conspecifics. One per tank in standard setups.

"Cool tropical temperatures are adequate." D. brachyura prefers warm temperatures (79-86 degrees F) reflecting the warm blackwater of the Rio Negro.

Recommended Setup

  • 40+ gallon tank
  • Very strong flow and high oxygenation
  • Smooth rocks and boulders for clinging and grazing
  • Driftwood (essential for grazing and behavioral enrichment)
  • Cave for shelter
  • Soft, acidic, tannin-stained water
  • Warm temperatures: 79-86 degrees F

Diet

L-052 butterfly plecos are biofilm and algae grazers with some plant material:

  • Driftwood (must always be available)
  • Spirulina and algae wafers
  • Blanched zucchini and cucumber
  • Sinking vegetable pellets

Feed daily in the evening. Driftwood must always be present as a continuous grazing surface. Supplement with blanched vegetables 3-4 times per week.

Personality

L-052 butterfly plecos are bold and visible for plecos, spending time on rocks and driftwood in observable positions. Their individual pattern variation means each fish looks different -- a feature especially valued by pleco collectors.

In a tannin-stained blackwater setup with strong flow, smooth dark rocks, and aged driftwood, L-052 butterfly plecos create one of the most authentic and visually stunning pleco biotope displays.

Their strong adhesive grip in fast current and active grazing behavior on all surfaces makes them engaging to observe in a well-maintained tank.

Water Parameters

L-052 butterfly plecos come from the soft, acidic, warm blackwater Rio Negro system:

  • pH: 4.5-6.5 (soft acidic blackwater)
  • Hardness (gH): 0-5 dGH (very soft)
  • Temperature: 79-86 degrees F
  • Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: below 10 ppm

Here are some top tips to deal with unwanted parameters:

  • Blackwater conditions are critical. Use RO water and add tannins through driftwood and Indian almond leaves.
  • High oxygenation from strong flow is essential.
  • Very low mineral content (soft water) is important.
  • Avoid copper-based medications.
