L-200 Green / Yellow Phantom Pleco Care Guide
A Complete Care Guide for Hemiancistrus subviridis

Introduction
Hemiancistrus subviridis, the L-200 green phantom pleco (also called the yellow phantom pleco), is a strikingly colored pleco from Venezuela. Their body is covered with small, vivid yellow to lime-green spots on a dark olive-green background, creating a phantom-like patterned effect that is highly distinctive. The yellow-green spots intensify with good water quality and nutrition.
Native to the Orinoco River drainage in Venezuela, particularly the Rio Ventuari and surrounding tributaries, L-200 inhabits fast-flowing, rocky, well-oxygenated river sections. Like many Hemiancistrus species, they require strong current and high dissolved oxygen.
L-200 care is intermediate. Their need for strong flow, good oxygenation, and a varied diet distinguishes them from easier plecos. Their vivid yellow-green on dark olive coloration is one of the most attractive pleco patterns available.
Basic Overview
Common Misconceptions
"The spots are the same in all light." The yellow-green spot intensity of L-200 is dynamic -- vivid in good conditions (warm, oxygenated, varied diet) and subdued in stress or poor water quality.
"Standard community tank flow is adequate." L-200 comes from fast-flowing rivers and requires significantly more flow and oxygenation than standard aquarium filtration provides. A dedicated powerhead is important.
"They eat primarily algae." They require a varied omnivore diet with both plant matter and protein.
Recommended Setup
- 55+ gallon tank
- Strong flow and high oxygenation
- Cave (one per fish)
- Driftwood
- Smooth rocks
- Warm temperature: 78-84 degrees F
Diet
L-200 green phantom plecos require a varied diet:
- Algae wafers and spirulina foods
- Sinking carnivore pellets
- Blanched zucchini and cucumber
- Frozen bloodworms
- Driftwood for biofilm grazing
Feed daily in the evening. Equal proportions of plant and protein foods maintain the most vivid yellow-green spotting.
Personality
L-200 green phantom plecos are active grazers that spend time on visible surfaces. Their yellow-green spots on dark olive body create an exceptional color combination that is particularly vivid under blue-spectrum aquarium lighting.
Like other Hemiancistrus species, they are territorial with conspecifics but peaceful with other species sharing different tank zones. In a well-oxygenated setup they emerge earlier and spend more time in visible positions.
Their combination of vivid patterning, manageable adult size, and interesting feeding behavior makes them one of the most popular intermediate-level plecos in the hobby.
Water Parameters
L-200 comes from the fast, warm Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela:
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- Hardness (gH): 5-15 dGH
- Temperature: 77-84 degrees F
- Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: below 20 ppm
Here are some top tips to deal with unwanted parameters:
- Strong flow and high dissolved oxygen are the most critical parameters.
- Warm water produces the most vivid yellow-green spotting.
- Weekly 25-30% water changes.
- Avoid copper-based medications.
