Threadfin Rainbowfish Care Guide

A Complete Care Guide for Iriatherina werneri

Introduction

Iriatherina werneri, the threadfin rainbowfish, is one of the most delicate and beautiful nano fish available. Males develop extraordinarily elongated, filamentous rays on their dorsal and anal fins, creating a spectacular display. Despite their fragile appearance, they are robust enough for experienced nano aquarists who can provide appropriate conditions.

Native to New Guinea and northern Australia, threadfin rainbowfish inhabit slow-moving, heavily vegetated still or near-still water bodies including swamps, lake margins, and slow streams. They require very gentle water movement and dense plant cover.

Threadfin rainbowfish care is rated intermediate. Their small size (1.5 inches), delicate fins that are easily damaged by fin-nippers, and requirement for very gentle flow make them unsuitable for standard community tanks. In a species-only or carefully curated nano setup, they are extraordinary display fish.

Basic Overview

Lifespan3-5 years
Size1.5 inches (males with fin extensions appear larger)
CareIntermediate (delicate fin requirements)
Tank Size15-20 gallons for a group of 8-10
Temperature75-82 degrees F
BehaviorPeaceful; schooling; males display to each other; requires very gentle flow; incompatible with nippy fish

Common Misconceptions

"They can go in a community tank." Any fish with a tendency to fin-nip will destroy threadfin rainbowfish fins rapidly. Even typically peaceful species like barbs or semi-aggressive tetras can devastate them. They should be kept only with very small, very peaceful species or in species-only setups.

"Strong filtration is fine." Threadfin rainbowfish come from nearly still water and cannot handle even moderate current. Their long delicate fins require very gentle, diffused flow. Sponge filters are ideal. Strong filter outputs will physically damage their fins.

"They school with other rainbowfish." Threadfin rainbowfish are a distinct nano species that should not be mixed indiscriminately with larger rainbowfish species. Larger, more boisterous rainbowfish will outcompete them for food and may damage their fins.

"Males always have full fin extensions." Male threadfins only develop full fin extensions in excellent conditions: pristine water quality, very gentle flow, no fin-nipping pressure, and correct temperature. Damaged or reduced fins are a direct indicator of suboptimal conditions.

Recommended Setup

  • 15-20 gallon tank for a group of 8-10
  • Very dense planting: fine-leaved plants (hornwort, java moss, najas grass)
  • Floating plants to reduce surface agitation and diffuse light
  • Sponge filter only (essential for very gentle flow)
  • Still to very gentle water movement
  • Warm, stable temperature
  • Dark substrate to enhance fin display contrast

Diet

Threadfin rainbowfish are micro-predators requiring very small foods:

  • Baby brine shrimp (live or frozen, highly preferred)
  • Micro worms and grindal worms
  • Daphnia (small enough for their tiny mouths)
  • Crushed nano pellets or micro flake
  • Infusoria for conditioning and fry

Feed twice daily in very small amounts. Threadfin rainbowfish have tiny mouths and cannot eat standard-sized foods. Everything must be micro-sized. Baby brine shrimp are the gold-standard food for maintaining condition and displaying full fin extensions in males.

Personality

Threadfin rainbowfish males are among the most spectacular display fish available in nano size. A group of males in a species tank with dense planting will display constantly to each other, fanning their extraordinary fin extensions in a competition for female attention that is truly remarkable to observe.

Their movements are slow, deliberate, and elegant. They drift through plant stems, hover in open areas, and reorient toward each other in displays that are entirely peaceful but visually extraordinary.

In the right setup, a school of 8-10 threadfin rainbowfish is one of the most beautiful things a small aquarium can contain. The investment in appropriate conditions is repaid fully by the visual experience.

Water Parameters

Threadfin rainbowfish come from warm, still, soft to moderately hard Australian and New Guinean waters:

  • pH: 6.5-8.0
  • Hardness (gH): 5-15 dGH
  • Temperature: 75-82 degrees F
  • Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: below 10 ppm

Here are some top tips to deal with unwanted parameters:

  • Very low nitrate (below 10 ppm) is important for threadfin rainbowfish health and fin condition. Small weekly water changes (15-20%) maintain stability without the parameter swings that larger changes cause.
  • Temperature stability is critical. Their small body mass means they are affected more quickly by temperature fluctuations than larger fish.
  • Pristine water quality is the single most important factor in maintaining full male fin extensions. Any decline in water quality results in fin regression within days.
  • Sponge filtration is strongly recommended. It provides biological filtration with no current strong enough to affect the fish.
