Introduction

Iriatherina werneri, the threadfin rainbowfish, is one of the most delicate and beautiful nano fish available. Males develop extraordinarily elongated, filamentous rays on their dorsal and anal fins, creating a spectacular display. Despite their fragile appearance, they are robust enough for experienced nano aquarists who can provide appropriate conditions.

Native to New Guinea and northern Australia, threadfin rainbowfish inhabit slow-moving, heavily vegetated still or near-still water bodies including swamps, lake margins, and slow streams. They require very gentle water movement and dense plant cover.

Threadfin rainbowfish care is rated intermediate. Their small size (1.5 inches), delicate fins that are easily damaged by fin-nippers, and requirement for very gentle flow make them unsuitable for standard community tanks. "They can go in a community tank." Any fish with a tendency to fin-nip will destroy threadfin rainbowfish fins rapidly. Their movements are slow, deliberate, and elegant. They drift through plant stems, hover in open areas, and reorient toward each other in displays that are entirely peaceful but visually extraordinary.

In the right setup, a school of 8-10 threadfin rainbowfish is one of the most beautiful things a small aquarium can contain. The investment in appropriate conditions is repaid fully by the visual experience.

Threadfin rainbowfish come from warm, still, soft to moderately hard Australian and New Guinean waters:

• pH: 6.5-8.0
• Hardness (gH): 5-15 dGH
• Temperature: 75-82 degrees F
• Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
• Nitrate: below 10 ppm

Here are some top tips to deal with unwanted parameters:

• Very low nitrate (below 10 ppm) is important for threadfin rainbowfish health and fin condition. Small weekly water changes (15-20%) maintain stability without the parameter swings that larger changes cause.
• Temperature stability is critical. Their small body mass means they are affected more quickly by temperature fluctuations than larger fish.
• Pristine water quality is the single most important factor in maintaining full male fin extensions. Any decline in water quality results in fin regression within days.
